1.To keep the cars from hitting hard objects or each other and,
2.I really like the look of Red/Yellow, it feels racier with color.
Most of our rails are set back from the track itself to allow some runoff room, but that isn't a hard rule.I use Medicine bottles with screws or pennies to help weight the ends down, or I use a bit of tape on the back of the rails,(I think this would work well on carpet, no damage to the carpet with painters blue tape).
If your tight on space, keep the rails on the outside line marking of the track.
